This Rotary International Youth Program attracts High School Students from over thirty nations!
When RI President Ian Riseley opened the 2017 World Affairs Seminar (WAS) last June he inspired over 300 high school age delegates from 36 nations to go out and change the world they will inherit. As the 2018 Seminar draws near, we expect an even greater number of delegates to experience the unique magic of learning, growing and interacting over the course of a week that promises to change lives.
This year’s Seminar “Innovation: Shaping the World You Will Inherit” will be held at Carroll University, Waukesha, Wisconsin June 23 – 29. A broad spectrum of issues will be explored, including the promise and limits of innovation. Sub-themes include manufacturing, education, architecture, engineering, economics, ecology (food, water), health, transportation and the arts.
Student delegates will meet in small groups, and will have the opportunity to choose which break-outs and field trips they attend.

Rotary Clubs that participate in World Affairs Seminar (WAS) and send students to WAS can claim credit for participating in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in their Club Goals. Rotary International allows Districts autonomy in developing programs for youth. It has been confirmed by RI that WAS meets the criteria. A thorough comparison between RYLA and WAS demonstrated that WAS meets the criteria for RYLA. Though there is no formal relationship between RYLA and WAS, confirmation was received from Jessie Dunbar-Bickmore, Supervisor of Programs for Young Leaders, Rotary International, indicating that this is acceptable to RI; WAS does satisfy criteria for RYLA.
WAS has been sharing Rotary International values and priorities with high school students from around the world since 1976. A Rotary Meeting open to all is held the last day. Sponsors are invited to visit any time to listen to WAS lectures and see WAS delegates in action.
