WAS Staff Counselors come from a variety of backgrounds including guidance counselors, teachers, librarians, business professionals, college students, and past participants.

World Affairs Seminar Counselors and Nurses are highly valued and the backbone of the WAS seminar experience. They have a strong desire to serve the community and world at large. Throughout the week they create a safe, positive, and fun environment, while facilitating the extensive academic curriculum as a cohesive and well-trained leadership team. WAS Staff Counselors come from a variety of backgrounds including guidance counselors, teachers, librarians, business professionals, college students, and past participants. This year Staff will consist of four levels:

  • Counselor 1 (first and second year counselors)
  • Counselor 2 (third year of experience and more)
  • Senior Staff: Dean of Students, Academic Coordinator, Recreation Coordinator, Transportation Coordinator
  • Registered Nurse (Registered Nurses preferable with experience in school nursing, pediatrics or emergency services. Background in camp nursing a plus, though not necessary).

Counselors are responsible for attending all training sessions, facilitating simulations and discussion groups, participating in and facilitating all recreational activities, walking to and from all large and small group sessions as well as all recreational activities, leading floor meetings, implementing and enforcing the rules and expectations of participants, assisting participants, staff, affiliated Carroll University staff, parents, and other support organizations throughout the seminar week, assisting in the check-in and check-out of participants, and additional tasks that may be assigned by the Dean of Students or Senior Staff Counselors. All work product such as photos, lesson plans, videos, recordings and other materials created for use as part of your Counselor duties become the property of WAS unless specifically agreed otherwise.

Your volunteer service will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2025. Please plan your travel to ARRIVE on campus by 11 a.m. to check-in and receive your room assignment. All Counselors are to attend both Seminar training sessions beginning at Noon on Friday June 20 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 at Carroll University. Your volunteer service will continue through the departure of all Seminar participants by 2:00 p.m. on June 27, 2025.  You are expected to be on duty in the residence halls each evening and overnight during that time period.

FRIDAY evening – Please plan your travel to ARRIVE on campus by 11 a.m. on training day to check-in and receive your room assignment. TRAINING SESSIONS: All Counselors are to attend both Seminar training sessions beginning at Noon on Friday and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Carroll University.

Transportation to the seminar is not provided by World Affairs Seminar staff. It is the individual counselor’s responsibility to make travel arrangements (flights, buses, personal vehicle, etc.) to and from the seminar. Counselors MAY return to the airports (MKE/ORD) via the scheduled shuttles on the last day of the seminar. Senior Staff positions include:
  • Dean of Students – Responsible for overseeing counseling staff, facilities, activities and safety during the seminar, including development, mentorship, and peer support for all counselors. Assists the Executive Director and Program Director as needed.
  • Academic Coordinator – Responsible for overseeing the implementation of academic platform, including the facilitation and introduction of keynote and breakout speakers as well as other academic activities. Assists the Academic Dean as needed.
  • Recreation Coordinator – Responsible for overseeing the organization and execution of all recreational activities, including nightly recreation time, talent show, dance, and other non-academic activities. Assists the Program Director as needed.
  • Transportation Coordinator – Responsible for overseeing arrival, check-in, transportation, attendance, and departure of all delegates, including organization of pre-planned field trips. Assists the Registrar as needed.

REGISTERED NURSE:  Medical Services/Special

The World Affairs Seminar (WAS), located in West Allis, Wisconsin requires a Registered Nurse to provide on-site medical support and general health care to student delegates during the annual Seminar.  Duties include check-in, medication collection and distribution, screening, health counseling and related duties. Serves under the guidance of Physician Medical Director, who approves standing orders

Skills & Abilities:  Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Wisconsin.  Ability to set priorities and work independently.  Highly detail-oriented, well-organized and capable of identifying and administering medical care.  Proficiency in school nursing/Emergency medicine is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain Medical Records for all Students and Temporary Staff
    1. Review health forms of Students and Staff prior to start of Seminar.
    2. Collect and maintain student medications; distribute as required
  2. Flag forms with potential health concerns (allergies, diabetes, asthma, seizures, etc.)
  3. Coordinate special arrangements for students with special needs.
  4. Provide 24-hour on site access to first-aid and nursing assessment (share duties between two nurses)
  5. Maintain records of student health concerns and treatment plan.
  6. Communicate with parents/guardians about health concerns.
  7. Evaluate and transport students requiring assessment to local clinics or physician office.
  8. Applies the Standing Orders of Medical Director, reviewing said standing orders and recommending changes if necessary.
  9. Maintains regular communication with Medical Director regarding provision of care to student delegates.
  10. Reviews medical supplies and requests replacements or new equipment/supplies as needed.
  11. Communicates with WAS Executive Staff regarding any issues of health or safety.
  12. Utilizes “The Basics of Camp Nursing” (most current edition) by Linda Ebner Erceg/Myra Pravda as a resource.
  13. Other duties as assigned or become necessary to the success of the Seminar.

Working Conditions:  Nursing Staff is a shared responsibility between two or more Registered Nurses.  Working hours are flexible, however at least one nurse must be available from the beginning of check-in through the end of the Seminar (7 days).  Nursing Staff are provided a private, air-conditioned room, all meals and materials.  Clinical area is adjacent to WAS Staff Offices during the Seminar at Carroll University.   Must be available full time during the days of the Seminar in June.  Seminar is held at Carroll University, Waukesha.

Refund Policy:

To receive credit after payment has been made, students, sponsors must notify the World Affairs Seminar in writing that their delegate is unable to attend, or if the sponsor is unable to fill a paid for space at the Seminar. (e-mail is considered "in writing" for these purposes as long as the e-mail is acknowledged as having been received.) Full credit applies if notification is received by April 1; 50% credit if application is cancelled between April 1 but prior to May 21; no credit is available if application is cancelled after May 21, unless extraordinary circumstances such as illness, death exist. All cancellation credits are subject to $75.00 processing fee and must be used within one calendar year. Note: in agreeing to attend WAS, parents and students promise to reimburse their sponsor for the full amount of any loss due to cancellation.
