Safety & Emergency Introduction

Your safety is important to us! In the event of an emergency, we want you to be prepared. Therefore we have provided you with some information to help you stay safe during your week on campus with us.

On-Campus Housing

Residence Hall Security 

To ensure the safety of our guests, Carroll University Residence Halls are locked at all times. Only WAS staff & counselors will be given outside door access. Guests with outside door access will swipe their Summer Guest Card in the small black box located in the vestibules/at the entrances of the hall(s). 

SRLAs reside in the residence halls with camp/conference guests and are on duty overnight from 8pm- 8am in case any issues arise. SRLAs will also be present at the front desks of each residence hall for a few hours each day. SRLAs will also perform regular checks of the residence halls each day and evening in order to ensure that the halls are safe and secure for our guests. 

Carroll University Public Safety Officers perform regular exterior checks of the residence halls, as well as patrol the campus and surrounding community. Public Safety works closely with the Waukesha Police and Fire Departments to ensure the safety and security of the campus and community. They are available 24/7 in case of emergencies by calling 262-524-7300. 

Cleaning and Maintenance Schedule 

Carroll University Custodians will come through the residence halls daily from approximately 1pm-4pm Monday-Friday to vacuum, empty trash from the hallway trash room(s), clean and sanitize public restrooms, etc. Additional time may be added during the week and on the weekends, depending on the camp schedule. 

Carroll University Maintenance Personnel will be present in the halls on an as-needed basis, specifically if something breaks or is damaged while a camp/conference is on campus. 

All Carroll University Custodial and Maintenance Personnel wear uniforms, and have a photo ID. 

Policies 

Quiet Hours should be observed from 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. Noise should be kept to a minimum during quiet hours. 

Courtesy Hours are in effect at all times. Noise to an excessive degree, at any time of the day, is considered a violation of this policy. 

Recreational Activities are prohibited within University Housing (i.e. bouncing balls, throwing Frisbees or balls, golfing, using skateboards, hoverboards, roller blades, bicycles, skates, remote controlled cars, squirt guns or foam projectile guns, etc.). Recreational activities outside of University Housing facilities should be done at a distance far enough to eliminate the possibility of damage to University buildings and property. 

Common area furniture and appliances in lounges, game rooms and study rooms is provided for the use of all guests. Any guest removing or damaging any piece of furniture or appliance from the common area may be subject to charges resulting from that damage and/or relocation. 

Littering from, in or around University Housing will not be tolerated as it destroys the appearance of our campus and can create a health hazard. 

Smoking and/or tobacco use is not permitted in University buildings, on University grounds, or in University-owned vehicles. There are no designated smoking areas on campus, including the Center for Graduate Studies. 

Propping fire doors and exterior doors in University Housing presents a security risk for all guests and is not permitted. 

Lost keys will be billed to the camp at a fee of up to $260/key. Lost summer guest cards will be billed to the camp at a fee of $20/card. Guest cards do not need to be returned at the end of camp; this fee is only if a replacement card is needed during camp. 

Theft is not tolerated. For the safety and protection of your personal belongings, always lock your door before sleeping and whenever you leave your room, even if it is only for a brief period. Any thefts, even minor ones, should be reported promptly to a Carroll University staff member. If the item or amount stolen is substantial, you should report the theft to the Office of Public Safety. 

Alcoholic beverages may not be possessed by any guest, or camp/conference staff member. 

Carroll University strives for a drug-free environment and takes seriously the negative effects illegal drugs and controlled substances have on its students and community. The University expects all to comply with state and federal laws.

Carroll puts top priority on the safety and well-being of the campus community. Their public safety officers are expertly-trained professionals who are highly visible and patrol campus full-time, 24/7, 365 days a year. In addition, their dispatch center is always staffed and ready to assist. The Department of Public Safety works in close partnership with local first responders to ensure the security of our students, staff and surrounding neighborhood.

Fire Safety

Carroll Fire Procedures: Each building is equipped with a fire alarm system. If you discover a fire, activate the alarm system, leave the building* and immediately notify the Department of Public Safety (262-524-7300; or x7300 from a campus phone). Testing of the alarm system will occur throughout the summer; the alarm will be sounded, and Public Safety and Residence Life personnel will walk floor by floor to ensure the system is functioning properly. Testing only lasts a few minutes. Carroll University staff may run a fire drill with full evacuation while we are on campus. We appreciate your participation with these drills. 

*Specific building evacuation routes are located on the back of all Residence Hall room doors, and are posted in Residence Halls and University facilities. 

When the fire alarm sounds:

  • Evacuate the building IMMEDIATELY, using either the front or back stairwells.
  • Do NOT use an elevator.
  • When outside, stand 500 feet away from the building.
  • If you cannot leave your room, put towels under your door, open the window, and signal to the fire department that you are there.
  • If there is a fire in your room, pull the fire alarm, evacuate the building, and alert a camp counselor or University Staff.
Tornado/Severe Weather

You will be notified by University staff of severe or threatening weather.

In case of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch or Tornado Watch, remain alert and listen to local TV or Radio.

In case of Severe Thunderstorm Warning, stay away from windows, turn off electronic equipment, and stay alert for tornadoes. You may go to the basement.

In case of a Tornado Warning, the tornado sirens in Waukesha will sound. Go to the basement IMMEDIATELY! Follow University staff & counselor instructions.

Emergency

Dial 9-1-1 in the event of an EMERGENCY only.

On-Campus Emergency Procedures: 

In the event of an emergency, all guests are expected to cooperate with the University’s efforts and the University’s Emergency Response Plan. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in the forfeiture of the privilege of using University Facilities and Services.

This includes personal, health, financial, or other information. Information you post on public websites and other accessible media is your responsibility.

Refund Policy:

To receive credit after payment has been made, students, sponsors must notify the World Affairs Seminar in writing that their delegate is unable to attend, or if the sponsor is unable to fill a paid for space at the Seminar. (e-mail is considered "in writing" for these purposes as long as the e-mail is acknowledged as having been received.) Full credit applies if notification is received by April 1; 50% credit if application is cancelled between April 1 but prior to May 21; no credit is available if application is cancelled after May 21, unless extraordinary circumstances such as illness, death exist. All cancellation credits are subject to $75.00 processing fee and must be used within one calendar year. Note: in agreeing to attend WAS, parents and students promise to reimburse their sponsor for the full amount of any loss due to cancellation.
