WAS Counselors & Nursing Staff

We’re recruiting Counselors and Registered Nurses for June 20–26, 2026 (plus a required training day).

Counselors come from many backgrounds—teachers, librarians, guidance counselors, business professionals, college students, and past participants—and work as a cohesive leadership team throughout the week.

Our staff consists of four levels:

 

  • Counselor 1 (first and second year counselors)
  • Counselor 2 (third year or more)
  • Senior Staff
  • Registered Nurse (school, pediatrics, or ER experience preferred; camp nursing background a plus)
  • Facilitate simulations and discussion groups; support academic sessions and recreational activities

  • Walk with delegates to and from large and small group sessions; lead nightly floor meetings

  • Implement and enforce participant rules and expectations; model inclusion and respect

  • Assist with check-in/check-out, daily logistics, and parent/school/partner questions as needed

  • Nurses: provide first aid and routine care, document incidents, coordinate outside care when appropriate World Affairs Seminar

Minimum Requirements:

  • You are completing your Sophomore year of college, or at least two years out of high school
  • If you are a WAS alumni, you should have a 1 year gap between applying and your last year as a delegate

  • Collaborative and imaginative attitude
  • Interest or experience in global issues and diplomacy
  • Experience facilitating small groups through academic excercises
  • Able and willing to participate in recreational and physical activities

  • Direct impact on student growth in diplomacy, teamwork, and problem-solving

Your contract will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 19, 2026.

Please plan your travel to ARRIVE on campus at the latest by 11 a.m. to check-in and receive your room assignment.

Your contract will continue through the departure of all Seminar participants by 2:00 p.m. on June 26, 2026. 

REGISTERED NURSE:  Medical Services/Special

The World Affairs Seminar (WAS), located in West Allis, Wisconsin requires a Registered Nurse to provide on-site medical support and general health care to student delegates during the annual Seminar.  Duties include check-in, medication collection and distribution, screening, health counseling and related duties. Serves under the guidance of Physician Medical Director, who approves standing orders

Skills & Abilities:  Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Wisconsin.  Ability to set priorities and work independently.  Highly detail-oriented, well-organized and capable of identifying and administering medical care.  Proficiency in school nursing/Emergency medicine is preferred.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain Medical Records for all Students and Temporary Staff
    1. Review health forms of Students and Staff prior to start of Seminar.
    2. Collect and maintain student medications; distribute as required
  2. Flag forms with potential health concerns (allergies, diabetes, asthma, seizures, etc.)
  3. Coordinate special arrangements for students with special needs.
  4. Provide 24-hour on site access to first-aid and nursing assessment (share duties between two nurses)
  5. Maintain records of student health concerns and treatment plan.
  6. Communicate with parents/guardians about health concerns.
  7. Evaluate and transport students requiring assessment to local clinics or physician office.
  8. Applies the Standing Orders of Medical Director, reviewing said standing orders and recommending changes if necessary.
  9. Maintains regular communication with Medical Director regarding provision of care to student delegates.
  10. Reviews medical supplies and requests replacements or new equipment/supplies as needed.
  11. Communicates with WAS Executive Staff regarding any issues of health or safety.
  12. Utilizes “The Basics of Camp Nursing” (most current edition) by Linda Ebner Erceg/Myra Pravda as a resource.
  13. Other duties as assigned or become necessary to the success of the Seminar.

Working Conditions:  Nursing Staff is a shared responsibility between two or more Registered Nurses.  Working hours are flexible, however at least one nurse must be available from the beginning of check-in through the end of the Seminar (7 days).  Nursing Staff are provided a private, air-conditioned room, all meals and materials.  Clinical area is adjacent to WAS Staff Offices during the Seminar.   Must be available full time during the days of the Seminar in June.
